Norton Anti-Virus Software 2008 was just released and it'd be a crime if we didn't review it, right? Forget about visiting websites with trepidation and opening emails with baited breath. The best anti-virus software can keep you safe while providing peace of mind. In an effort not to sound like an infomercial, we decided to take a look at Norton's newest baby...so read on below.

Star Reviews Favorite Feature:

We're not really sure if you can call our favorite feature a "feature' per say, but if we had to pick one thing we liked best about Norton AntiVirus 2008 it's that the new and improved version no longer sucks up and monopolizes your system resources. In fact, we could barely tell a difference in system performance when we were running AntiVirus 2008 and when we weren't. This is a huge plus since Norton has been notorious for slowing down even the best computers.

Norton AntiVirus 2008 User Interface and Product Application:

Okay, before we go one step further we need to warn you... Make sure you completely un-install any previous versions of Norton or any other anti-virus software from your computer or you're going to run into problems that will result in you running around in circles and eventually banging your head against the wall. Do not just use the Add/Remove feature from your control panel. Actually use the product's un-install feature or you may be left with components that interfere with Norton AntiVirus 2008's ability to function properly.

That being said, once you've un-installed any other anti-virus applications, the download and install process for Norton AntiVirus 2008 is pretty standard. Expect a bit of a wait while the product downloads (unless, of course, you have CDs and you don't need to download anything). Once you have the app on your system, installation is a simple prompt and click process.

We found the Norton Anti-Virus Software 2008 user interface to be easy to use. Nothing fancy or flashy – just the features you need laid out in an easy-to-access format. That being said, we do feel that Norton AntiVirus 2008 may not be as customizable as some users would like it to be. While all of the features are easy to access, customizing the features is not always possible.

Scanning with Norton was easy. Just click and go. However, you have to scan all or nothing. Norton does not give you the option of only scanning recently modified files. This is a bit of a time waster, but it may be grounded in a "better to be safe than sorry" mentality. Of course, we couldn't complain too much. We did notice faster scanning times with Norton AntiVirus 2008 than we did with some of the competition.

We were happy to see that Norton AntiVirus also offers network monitoring. It's a vital feature if you have multiple computers networked in your home and it really puts Norton ahead of the pack in the arena of AntiVirus applications.

Customer Support:

Norton AntiVirus 2008 offers customer support via an online help section, phone, chat, email and a new one-click support feature that's integrated into the product. We really suggest using the one-click. It will bring up Norton's AutoFix utility, which may be able to address your problem on its own. If not, you'll be able to contact support via phone or chat and can see exactly how long the wait time for each is and how much it will cost.

When contacting live support via phone, expect to wait at least five minutes (if not longer). Our wait was only 4 minutes, but we've heard of people waiting on hold for almost an hour. I guess it depends on exactly what you're calling about and what day and time you're calling. The team at Star Reviews has come to the conclusion that chat support is probably your best bet. Not only do wait times tend to be shorter, but you have a detailed log of everything said and the chat rep can (with your permission) takes control of your PC and can fix the problem remotely.

Upside:

No drain on system resources, network mapping tools, automatic updates.

Downside:

Customizable settings/scans not the best.

Norton has never been able to really find all the viruses and I have had problems with the product too. It crashes my system and is too big for a regular PC. Even for the fastest one too

Norton is an OK antivirus program. I have had Norton for about two years however I am disappointed with the service and will be moving on after my contract is up.

I used Norton before many times and if anything it didn't catch the viruses my computer had. There are many other products that actually protect your home pc. As a corporate product I would say works fine.
